Have you had your fill of Viking invaders and dark age intrigue? Me neither! So here comes season two of The Last Kingdom. The setting is southern england during the 9th century. Young Uhtred witnesses his saxon noble father being killed by Danish invaders, leaving his uncle in charge of Uhtred’s lands by birthright. The young lad is taken as a slave by the Danish warleader, Earl Ragnar. Years later, the vikings who took him are now his adoptive family and Uhtred seems content to live as one of them, until Earl Ragnar is betrayed by one of his own people and killed, freeing a conflicted Uhtred. The now grown up Uhtred wants revenge over the killing of Ragnar and wants to reclaim his lands that his unscrupulous uncle has taken from him. His loyalties are constantly tested as he is viking in all but birth and also a saxon noble. I’m leaving some elements out of the first season for and purposes of an easy read.

At the end of season one, we find Uhtred has helped his now friend, King Alfred of Wessex, defeat a viking army, securing him the freedom to revenge the death of Earl Ragnar and reclaim his own lands to the north. I’m expecting season two to show how Uhtred is continuing  to struggle with his saxon blood and viking upbringing. He still needs to reclaim his lands and this should bring about more bloody warfare, which is always entertaining. There should be new friends and enemies to greet, more beautiful english settings and surly viking shenanigans. All in all, this dark age period series should stand out among any similar series.
