Marvel.com has recently announced that Benedict Cumberbatch will play Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 3 movie with the same title. Apparently he beat out Johnny Depp, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jared Leto.
So just who is benedict Cumberbatch? He is a British actor that has been in many television shows and movies. He is probably best known for playing Sherlock Holmes in the BBC miniseries Sherlock. This is how I originally learned about him anyway. By the way, that’s an awesome show. If you have not had a chance to check it out yet, I suggest you do so. He actually recently won a Primetime Emmy for this role. One interesting fact I learned about Cumberbatch is that he is a huge fan of Robert Downey Jr. So it’s pretty cool that they both played the Sherlock character. He also played the villain Khan in the Star Trek Into Darkness movie that came out in 2013. He is the lead in The Imitation Game, which is in theaters currently and is gaining Oscar buzz. I haven’t seen yet, but am looking forward to watching it soon.
And who is Doctor Strange? According to Marvel, Doctor Strange is a neurosurgeon Doctor named Stephen Strange. After a horrific car accident, he severely damaged the nerves in his hands which ended his surgical career. He couldn’t handle the fact that he loses the ability to perform surgery and eventually he discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions. He decides to become the defender of Earth and protect Earth against magical and mystical threats. The character first appeared in the comic “Strange Tales” #110 and has appeared in the comic groups X-Men, Fantastic Four, and the Avengers.
This is definitely one Marvel movie that I am really excited to see. Doctor Strange will be directed by Scott Derrickson and is due to come out in November 4, 2016.
